Phoebe Cates: Actress, Singer, Entrepreneur?
If you’re a fan of teen flicks from the 1980’s, there are likely a few leading ladies you will never forget. There’s adorable Danica McKellar from The Wonder Years, super hot Phoebe Cates of The Gremlins fame, and of course, teen-queen Molly Ringwald, who was in more movies than we care to name at this junction. And while we can still keep up with Danica and Molly, as they continued in the entertainment biz, we haven’t seen that much of Phoebe Cates. We decided to find out what happened to the starlet who captured the imagination of a generation by sporting a bikini in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. After appearing in a number of cult favorites like Princess Caraboo and Drop Dead Fred, as well dabbling in music for a bit, Cates decided to retire from acting in the mid 90’s, to dedicate herself to raising her kids with fellow actor extraordinaire, Kevin Kline, whom she married in 1989.
The Klines reside in New York City, and while Kevin is still very active in the movie biz, Phoebe transformed herself from an actress into a creative entrepreneur. In 2005, she opened up the Blue Tree boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue, which has been a dream of hers for many years. Since opening, it has gained a loyal following in and around the neighborhood, but also across the pond, as shipping orders come from as far as Asia, Europe and Africa. The store has an “anything goes” flare as it houses items that can range from a few dollars to several thousand, with something fitting any budget. Needless to say it’s an unusual price range for a “general store”, and while it lacks any real categorization, it’s one of the few places you can by a 19th century pearl necklace for several thousand along with a children’s game for 5 bucks. So if you’re looking for something unusual, special and unique, chances are you’ll find it at the Blue Tree, but don’t tell Phoebe that she looks like the hot chick from Ridgemont High, all you’ll get in response is “I get that a lot”.
