Samoan food isn’t heavily spiced, so it goes down a little smoother than something with lots of spice. Their food is also characterized by the use of coconut milk and cream. Some staple foods are taro, breadfruit, bananas, coconut, fish and shellfish, chicken and pork. Samoan Umu is a traditional ground stone oven heated by glowing hot lava rocks used to cook food. The food can be placed on the rocks, wrapped in banana leaves or plaited in coconut fronds for cooking. A Fia Fia is an event at Aggie Grey’s Hotel every Wednesday. During the event, fire dancers, songs and traditional food all join together for a fun filled and entertaining evening. Kava is the traditional drink here and is served only during special events. It is advised that visitors only drink bottled or boiled water here. Vailima Beer is considered to be one of the best beers in the Pacific Region and it is brewed in Samoa. It only makes sense that it’s an excellent beer because it was established by a German.
