Volume 27 | Artist Spotlight: Liz Publika
Liz Belilovskaya is a rising mixed-media artist and illustrator based in New York. Born in Russia, but living in the Big Apple since she was 7 years old, the multi-cultural transplant embraced the diversity of the city. Firmly believing that an individual is the sum of his or her parts, Liz cultivated interests in art, history, architecture, and the life sciences. Her artwork is a visual expression of her internal narrative about these very subjects.
“When I draw, I like to have a central theme, with a lot of patterns and detail around it. So, if the viewer gets close to the canvas, he or she can find micros-clusters of design integrated with the main picture.” Though a general examination of her art reveals that she does have a “type”, Liz prefers to concentrate on “mixing it up”, dabbling in everything from traditional to contemporary art.
Not one to follow the crowd, Liz paved her own way into New York’s exclusive art scene. “Being an artist is incredibly expensive, while promoting and selling yourself is difficult and time consuming. Furthermore, galleries, agents, or other services can take anywhere between 20-50% of the profit once you do manage to sell something, so, an artist crafting his or her own brand must think outside the box.”

One of the ways Liz attracts traffic to her site is by creating a license-free photography section on her professional website, www. LizPublika.com. “Anyone can download and use my photography for their personal or professional needs, as long as I receive credit. But my paintings, drawings, illustrations, and accessories are my creative property.”
Liz also strives to partner with interior design companies that may be interested in collaborating together. “I figure if people want beautiful art on their walls, I may as well go to the experts who know a thing or two about decor and see where my work may be of service.”
