The Miami International Film Festival Kicks into High Gear
If you are lover of international & independent films, odds are that you are in the know about the Miami International Film Festival. The week-long competitive festival is widely known for its focus on Ibero-American films and draws international attention with films showcased city-wide in several venues, featuring the best of the best in documentaries, short films and retrospectives.
The festival which is put on by Miami Dade College will showcase nearly 100 films. This year MIFF will screen seven feature films and 17 short films that will be making their World Premier, 12 films will be making their North American premier, and six will be screening for the first time in the United States. That being said, there will be plenty of riveting cinema for serious and casual enthusiast to enjoy.
This year promises to bring big names from Hollywood to appear on the silver screen, including Oscar winners Shirley Maclaine and Christopher Plummer in the North American Premier of Elsa & Fred, directed by Michael Radford. Other big name stars include Tilda Swinton and Tom Huddleston in director Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, Joaquin Phoenix in The Immigrant, and Andy Garcia in Rob the Mob.
