New Yorkers have gotten accustomed to seeing artificial twinkling lights rather than stars in the night sky, but we have an opportunity to peruse a stargazer's dream in this recreation of a spaceship module. The New Museum will be transforming their fifth floor into a simulation of a spaceship interior to present the “Museum as a Hub; Report on the Construction of a Spaceship Module” exhibit curated by tranzit, a network of autonomous Austrian, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian and Slovakian groups.Image Source: New MuseumThe simulation is constructed with inspiration from shuttles portrayed in Cold War-era Eastern European fiction films, which prominently captures the ideological influence of its origins onto the futuristic fantastical depiction of outer space. With roughly one hundred and seventeen mixed media and traditional artworks displayed in and around the spacecraft, the exhibition will display pieces from Eastern European artists whom tranzit had worked with previously. The exhibit is organized in a way that conveys an allegorical message on the progression of science fiction while dramatizing the challenges that contemporary artists have in presenting their art. The gallery space itself becomes an exciting and extravagant otherworldly universe that weaves together the independent but interconnected diversity of these Eastern European groups.The floor will be open for viewing from January 22^nd to April 6^th in 2014 in the New Museum, which is located on Bowery Street between Rivington Street and Stanton Street.
