Sean Kelly Gallery: Celebrating Mapplethorpe's Saints and Sinners

With the recent drop in temperature, indoor outings are the perfect solutions for a Saturday afternoon. For those who are not shy to the monochromatic and opaque, perhaps a walk through the open and airy space at Sean Kelly is the first gallery you see this year.The gallery, made open to the public on 1995, is renowned for its unconventional and stimulating mixed media exhibitions. Since then it has jumped from SoHo to Chelsea and finally to their current location on Tenth Avenue in a historic (circa 1914) building. Founded by its British-born namesake, Sean Kelly, it has showcased hundreds of international artists, and through the 25^th of January a selection of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs will be open to audience.The exhibit titled Robert Mapplethorpe: Saints and Sinners contains twenty-seven pairings (some of which are rarely exhibited) of fearless and classic-Mapplethorpe photography. Playing on the juxtaposing theme of saints and sinners, the gallery sets the spectator off brimming with personal interpretation of the intentional pairings and leaving with a fresh perspective on his work.Peek: Mapplethorpe’s Self-Portrait (1980) – a photograph of himself in drag – paired with singer/actress, Amanda Lear (1976) depicting two unique portraits of female sexuality.Naturally, we’ll have to celebrate the 25^th Anniversary of his landmark exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Moment with tardiness; it passed last December; but we’ll still be welcome in the halls of SK gallery.  Sean Kelly is open Tuesday - Friday, 11am to 6pm and Saturdays from 10am to 6pm.It is located on: 475 Tenth Avenue, New York NY 10018. Image Source(s): Jason Mandella; Mapplethorpe’s Self-Portrait (1980); Source: www.skny.com
