Sarmite Ostanevica - Art, Fashion, London
While symmetry is often considered a staple of beauty, occasionally it can get pretty boring. Many designers are aware of this and as a result, have long ago abandoned any prescribed rules for designing their collections. By adding irregular cuts, unusual shapes, and interesting motifs to their creations, they have transformed the way we understand beauty and, in effect, how we approach fashion. Since fashion is about self-expression and self-expression tends to be flexible, it’s nice to know that designers are keeping that in mind while working on their collections. London based clothing designer Sarmite Ostanevica is one of them. Her work often feature clothing that is both modern and minimalist; it is her signature style to mix surrealism with rustic and contemporary elements, just check out her latest AW13 collection, Sculpture Wedding. Now, some forms of art can be incomprehensibly abstract. Ostanevica seems to be well aware of the faint, but significant, line between too much and just enough experimentation. Her clothing is fashionable, comfortable and artistic, or in other words, it can be approached as wearable art. By creating pieces that catch and keep our attention in a positive and reassuring sort of way, she may very well become a household name in the near future. She is well versed in fashion; having made her debut in Riga, Latvia in November of 2010, her Feminine Army collection was nominated for a Latvian fashion award only a half a year later. In the time that followed, Ostanevica has received mainly positive reviews from some of the top designers and publication in the world. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Flanelle, and Papercut, gaining widespread recognition.
