Obsessed with 70’s jet-set style

The world of fashion seems to be continually smitten with “the sexy” that was 1970’s style. Now, to be clear, this is NOT the polyester, striped, vinyl, turtle-necky, chunky style that described many a 70’s childhood wardrobe. This style refers to what the artists, the designers and their muses, the club kids, the jet setters, the rich divas and the gender-benders wore… ESPECIALLY when they all hung out together!

It was about the proportions: long and sleek.

It was about the fabrications and applications: sheer, silky, jersey’d, feathered and sequined.

It was about the simplicity and timelessness: drapes, wraps, suits and ease.

And finally, it was about exploring the world: kaftans, headdresses, tunics and patterns.

Politics, nostalgia, sex, and music all played important roles in defining the many different looks of the decade. Not only were European runways filled with these inspirations, but so were underground clubs, rock concerts and cities around the world. Mumbai (Bombay) the film capital of India was simply bursting with glam fashion in the 70’s!

Ahhhhhh glossy sequined heaven…

The cultural influence of the 1970s has never been as hot as it is right now. The fall runways were studded with glam rock references from metallic blazers to platform boots and leather leggings. David Bowie- the penultimate style icon, is also rumored to be a major influence on Hedi Slimane’s first collection for Saint Laurent Paris.Prints, jumpsuits, slits, bling, fluid drapery and luxurious fabrics are integral to many spring/summer 2013 collections: Marc Jacobs, Versace, Derek Lam, Vena Cava, DVF, Naeem Khan, Ports 1961 and Chloe to name just a few. Clearly 70’s fabulousness lives on and (hopefully) on!
