Mrs. Carter Doesn't Need Your Consent
The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour is kicking off on April 15th in Belgrade, Serbia, and if the halftime show was anything to go by, it’s going to be freaking awesome! In our anticipation, we hit the web to see if we could find any details; we were hoping for some leaked backstage info, or maybe some fashion scoop, but instead we found something else. On February 4th, Slate published an article written by Aisha Harris. In it she questioned Beyonce’s reason to refer to her husband. Furthermore, she stated that because Jay-Z has previously released a number of misogynistic songs throughout his career, by marrying him, Beyonce supports the messages conveyed, as if she is OK with being undermined by her husband, and in effect, OK with being devalued. The next day, The Independent published a similar article by Grace Dent, criticizing Beyonce’s decision to refer to herself as “Mrs. Carter “ because, supposedly, this is her turning her back towards feminism. Dent illustrated this by stating that earlier in Beyonce’s career, she stressed her independence and success as being her own, rather than earned by her association with Jay-Z.Now, while we understand what both authors are trying to say, we couldn’t disagree with them more. Mr. and Mrs. Carter make up the top earning entertainment couple in America. That said, we would like to point out that out of the two of them, Mrs. Carter is in-fact the breadwinner. When they met, Beyonce was barely an adult. Almost a decade passed between their wedding and initial introduction. During that time, Beyonce became an award-winning solo artist, movie star, designer, entertainer, and entrepreneur in her own right. It’s also important that throughout it all, for every “Independent Women”, she also released “Cater 2 U”.What we are trying to say is that her overall personality remained consistent; the details of her life, however, have in fact changed. Marriage, recent motherhood, and Beyonce’s longstanding devotion to her partner, simply show that she is growing into her new life and enjoys the newfound roles. So as far as we are concerned, Mrs. Carter, has earned the right to call herself whatever she wants. Now that, dear friends, is independence.Image Source: Beyonce.comWriter Source: The Independent, Slate, Liz Belilovskaya
