Summer is approaching, and for native New Yorkers that means the opening of Governor’s Island once again – oh the joy! For those of you who still haven’t paid a visit to the city’s best kept secret, hop on a ferry as soon as possible to an island that is reminiscent of a young America.Only recently did the petite island grab the attention of the city becoming a land of recreational and operational value. Each year there are new activities to take advantage of during the warmer season but for the past eight years one event has many of us on our toes: The Jazz Age Lawn Party.The eighth annual jazz party, hosted by Michael Arnella and his Dreamland Orchestra, is the pulse of the summer festivals for the closet flappers and dandies hidden in our fair city. Hosted by fabulous Mr. Arnella of Georgia, the party becomes more successful with each coming year. This calls for a larger dance floor on the Great Lawn. Imagine being encircled by century-old trees, that subtle sting of fresh sea air and dreamy nostalgic architecture (windmills included!), while being served delish cocktails, vegan food options and dancing the breezy day away in your best Charleston step. Photo courtesy of TIMEOUT NYThis year affair features truly hard-hitting ‘20s feel artists such as conductor/composer/singer extraordinaire Michael Arnella, soulful crooner Queen Esther, pianist Peter Mintun and vaudeville duo Gelber & Manning. Learn the hottest steps of the Golden Age and maybe you’ll hang out with dance troupe Roddy Caravella & the Canarsie Wobblers or tap sensations The Minksy Sisters. For those who have been touched with the thrifty thumb; there will be revived antique gramophones, and vintage photographs for your fancy.Suitable attire required, so dapper up in your finest pearls, lace slips and garter belts, ladies. Junior flapperettes and chaps are welcome make it a family occasion! Gentlemen, don’t forget those hats: ‘tis an excuse to tip towards a belle.
