Flying High
This high bar gymnast has soared above the rest to become an artist in Cirque du Soleil.
Oleksandr Pylypenko hails from Ukraine. He first started as an artist in Alegria in 2001 and has been a member of Mystere since 2005. Prior to that, he began formal training in gymnastics at age seven and continued training until he turned eighteen. Unlike other Cirque artists who may have been scouted, he went to an audition in Kiev. After that successful audition, he was invited to a general formation but had to wait until he turned 18 so he could get a passport. When asked about his experience with the audition, Pylypenko responded with “It was a little stressful because being at general formation didn’t guarantee I was going to get a job and the training really pushed me out of my comfort zone.” Most would think that such a transition from Ukraine to Las Vegas would be tough, but Pylypenko’s transition was rather easy. “I was given the opportunity to slowly grow into my role in Alegria and I already knew a lot of the artists there from general formation, so it went well. When I joined Mystere I didn’t know as many people but my integration was far easier. Being a part of Cirque du Soleil can shine a new and brighter light on anyone’s discipline. For Oleksandr, he combines his gymnastic skills with the artistic direction of Cirque, so each night brings something amazing and unique to the audience. One thing is for certain though. Just like any performer, the reaction and feedback from the audience is the most rewarding part. The energy they feel from the audience being amazed and in love with their discipline is amazing. On top of that, Oleksandr adds “and you actually get paid to have fun.” Info source: www.cirquedusoleil.com
