Art Basel, Miami FL

Miami has long been hailed as the place to visit for local nightlife and culture while in Florida. There are so many sources of entertainment in Miami that can be enjoyed while embracing the tropical weather of the Everglades, the beaches or even while shopping at the great array of stores. Miami is equipped with a seemingly infnite number of clubs and restaurants, making it a diverse, central attraction for culture seekers. Adding to this diverse backdrop is Art Basel. Established in the 1970s, Art Basel has put its drive and passion behind the careers of artists to create the impressive platform that stands today. Art Basel stages the world’s premier modern and contemporary art fairs. These fairs are staged every year in Hong Kong, China, Basel, Switzerland and, of course, Miami Beach. At the Miami show, visitors can view contemporary art in all forms, including, but not limited to, sculptures, paintings and photography. These works are collected from the leading galleries throughout the country, in addition to Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Attracting over 70,000 people annually, the Art Basel Miami strays from the historical glitz we have come to associate with Miami nightlife and is instead curated with works shaped by politics. Art Basel is led by Marc Spiegler, Global Director, Noah Horowitz, Director Americas and Adeline Ooi, Director Asia, with curators Nicholas Baume, David Gryn and Marian Masone. This year’s Basel Miami featured live performances by Xavier Cha, Ryan Gander, Pope.L and Yan Xing as part of the Public sector, which opened in Collins Park. As Ted Loos of The New York Times stated: “Art Basel in Miami Beach is firmly entrenched as one of the most sought-after and meticulously planned events on the American art world calendar.” While most works are displayed indoors in the main exhibition halls, the 2015 show featured numerous large-scale pieces that almost melted into Miami’s landscape by the local Collins Park and SoundScape Park. Art Basel also provides a forum for stimulating discussions; engaging the audience and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of the artists, their practices, what is new and happening in the art world.
