A Second Chance

This entrepreneur didn’t say no to a fresh start in his career.What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, when one door gets slammed in your face another one invitingly opens. Bobby Sabelhaus is laughing at his failures now, even though he wasn’t back then. Back in spring of 1996, Sabelhaus was one of the most hyped football recruits in Florida history and one of the top high school quarterbacks in the nation. He was listed above future NFL quarterback Brock Huard and Tom Brady in recruiting publications. Out of all the other colleges who wanted him, he signed with the University of Florida in February 1995. As the 1996 spring game approached, Sabelhaus needed some technical help with his sidearm, but he and Florida coach Steve Spurrier didn’t quite see eye to eye. After a failed spring game, Sabelhaus left Florida and went to Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California before transferring to West Virginia, where he lasted less than a week. His name became synonymous with “bust” to college football fans. He may have not succeeded at football, but he’s far from a failure.

Bobby Sabelhaus is now a movie producer. Sabelhaus, producing partner John Zaozirny, and writer Ian Schorr spent much of 2010 and 2011 developing a script with a futuristic twist of Alexandre Dumas’ classic The Count of Monte Cristo. Warner Bros. optioned the script even though none of them are big names. If this movie gets made and is successful, Sabelhaus’ name could become as well known in Hollywood as it was in the recruit world, but in a good way.
